According to Lenice Barnett (Executive director of the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB)), there is draft legislation to amend the Students’ Loan Fund Act, with new provisions to place a stop order on delinquent borrowers of the SLB who might be attempting to migrate. Barnett made the disclosure yesterday to members of Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee.
The delinquency rate among SLB borrowers is currently at 18.2 per cent (representing approximately J$1.1 billion in arrears), and it is not uncommon to hear of incidents where SLB borrowers leave the country for good, without repaying the money that they borrowed.
